Project Description

As part of the obligations for approval of the Fernbank CDP area in Kanata, the Fernbank Land-Owners Group (FLOG) entered into a Front-Ending Agreement (FEA) with the City of Ottawa for the construction of Robert Grant Avenue (RGA), a new arterial road through development lands from Fernbank Road to Hazeldean Road.

The first phase of this project saw the design and construction of a two-lane road with consideration for the future six-lane cross section. The project included three new roundabouts, sidewalk and raised cycle tracks along the length of RGA, the introduction of a new signalized intersection at Fernbank Road, and servicing work to support the surrounding developments. Cycle tracks were separated vertically from the sidewalk by a half-height curb on a pilot project basis. This technique has since by adopted by the City of Ottawa as a standard treatment.

This project was completed in conjunction with the master-planned Fernbank community. Joining the communities of Stittsville and Kanata South, Fernbank is a multi-phase, multi-year community covering 674 hectares that, once complete, will accommodate up to 31,000 new residents.

Total project value is approximately $35M. Phase II (Abbott Street to Hazeldean Road) is now in construction.
